How to Reset the Tension on a Retractable Banner Stand
If your retractable banner is no longer pulling back smoothly — or won’t retract fully — the internal spring tension may need to be reset.
This is a common issue, especially after multiple uses or graphic interchanges. Shipping can be a big one as well.
The good news?
In many cases, you can reset the tension yourself.
Here’s how.
First: What Causes Tension Issues?
Retractable banners operate using an internal spring mechanism.
Over time, tension can weaken due to:
- Shipping
- Frequent setup and teardown
- Graphic replacements
- Letting the banner snap back too quickly
- Improper storage
- Natural wear
When tension weakens, you may notice:
✔ The banner retracts slowly
✔ The banner stops before fully retracting
✔ The banner doesn’t pull up smoothly
✔ The banner feels loose
⚠ Important: Before You Begin
Resetting tension involves working with a spring-loaded mechanism.
Always:
- Work on a flat surface
- Keep firm control of the graphic
- Move slowly and carefully
- Never let the spring snap freely
If you are unsure, contact us before attempting.
Step 1: Access the Internal Roller
Lay the base flat.
Depending on your hardware model, you may need to:
- Remove an end cap - We recommend both end caps
- Loosen side screws
- Access the roller mechanism
Once exposed, you’ll see the internal aluminum roller tube.
Step 2: Manually Re-Tension the Roller
Holding the roller firmly:
- Rotate the internal tube in the direction that increases tension.
- Typically, this means rolling it tighter in the direction the graphic normally retracts.
Add 15-20 rotations. But you may need more. We say feel for the tension, once the tension starts to change from loose to having weight, to stop.
Do NOT over-tighten.
Too much tension can cause:
- Snapping
- Premature wear
- Damage to the spring
- Hanger pulling into the hardware if the pin is not in place when stored.
Step 3: Reattach and Test
Once tension is reset:
- Put end caps on. Starting with the tension side first.
- Slowly test retraction
Always guide the banner down gently the first time. You will know what feels right.
How Many Rotations Should You Add?
There’s no universal number.
Most cases require:
- 15 to 20 additional turns
Start small.
Test.
Adjust if needed.
When Tension Cannot Be Fixed
If the spring is:
- Broken
- Severely worn
- Making grinding noises
- Snapping abruptly
The internal mechanism may need replacement.
In that case, replacing the hardware base is usually the best option.
How to Prevent Future Tension Problems
✔ Never let the banner snap down freely
✔ Always guide it down slowly
✔ Store upright when possible
✔ Store with the safety pin in
✔ Don’t exceed recommended graphic height
Proper handling dramatically increases lifespan.
Watch the Video Tutorial
We’ve included a video demonstration showing how to safely reset tension on our retractable banner hardware. This video is also helpful if your hanger falls inside, as you will need to follow the same steps to fix it.
If you’re unsure at any point, pause and review the steps before continuing.
Final Thoughts
Retractable banners are designed to be reusable and long-lasting.
Most tension issues are minor and easily corrected with careful handling.
