How to Achieve a True, Deep Black in Your Printed Displays
When it comes to tradeshow displays, banners, and backdrops, color accuracy makes all the difference — especially when printing a true, rich black. A black that looks bold on screen can sometimes print dull or washed out if not set up correctly. That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you set up your artwork properly for the best results.
Why True Black Matters
Black is one of the most used colors in display design — from background fills to logos and text. However, not all black inks are created equal. Printers mix cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y), and black (K) inks to produce your desired tone. Using the wrong combination can lead to a faded gray instead of a deep, professional black.
Our team has tested, profiled, and adjusted our print processes over time to create the most consistent and vibrant results across all materials. Below are our current True Black recommendations.
True Black Settings by Material
For Stretch, Multi-Stretch, and Roll Up Materials
Use the following CMYK formula:
C: 0 M: 0 Y: 0 K: 100
This pure black mix is unique to our printing process and optimized for the rich saturation needed on these fabric-based materials.
For Mesh, Silver Flag, Scrim, Super Flat, Backlit, Tent, PVC, Fence Mesh, Backlit Film, Canvas, Blankets, and Towels
Use this CMYK formula:
C: 75 M: 75 Y: 75 K: 100
This deeper combination provides a denser, more vibrant black on materials that require additional ink coverage for full opacity and visual impact.
Continuous Improvement for the Best Results
As we continually improve our production process, our True Black formulas may evolve. Each profile adjustment is designed to give you the most accurate, consistent color possible across every material we print on.
If you’re ever unsure about your file setup, our design team is happy to review your artwork before printing to ensure your display looks as bold and professional as it should.
Final Tip
When creating your artwork, always design in CMYK color mode and apply the correct True Black formula for your chosen material. Doing so ensures that your printed display comes out looking exactly how you envisioned — strong, clean, and professional.
